A Walk down Buttermilk Falls

My son told me this trail is called Buttermilk Falls.
It's a beautiful creek that that's part of all my walks beyond the neighborhood......It's probably a good thing...
I never knew that my children took walks down the creek bed when they were teens.
They'd say, "Mom, we're walking to the creek."
"Okay... enjoy yourselves."
Little did I know that going to the creek meant walking down the creek to Buttermilk Falls. On Mother's Day this year, Jason said...
"Hey, Mom & Dad, have you ever walked down the creek?"
"Well, we've walked passed the creek, solved world problems and meditated while looking at the creek... but down the creek... No...not really.
I never knew that the hike down the creek was like stepping into J.R. Tolkien's world of imagination! At every turn, I expected a Hobbit to walk out of one of the rock formations!
Or twisted trees!
Luckily, the only creatures around were familiar... except for this tiny newt!
These photos were taken with cellphones! Probably a good thing I didn't carry my camera... I needed both hands to hike the slippery rocks!
We didn't get to the end of the trail... it was on a steeper trail...
...We'll save that for a drier creek bed day.
What a great idea Jason!
Thanks!

  3. Just my kind of walk - see what we can learn from our children! The orange newt is great - glad you saw it. I hope you had some rhubarb cake when you returned.

  4. Beautiful creek and rock formations Maria... you are lucky to have such beauty close by...I just walked the length of one of our creek beds recently...although it was a slight bit wilder and rougher...and not as large...but, it was still a wonderful thing to do...We should do it more often Maria! Barb mentioned your rhubarb cake...I'm going to copy it now, before I forget.

  5. My parents forbid me to go near the creek when I was growing up. I loved that creek, spent lots of good times there. Sorry Mom and Dad.

  7. What a beautiful walk Maria. We used to live upstate NY - in fact both my husband and I were born in NY, as were our two sons.
Thanks for sharing your lovely pictures.

  8. I love the luscious photographs, but none of them match the grandeur of that Rhubarb Cake.

  9. It was a great day. Hiking up or down streams is like taking Gods less traveled road.

  11. Linda, you are the second person (online) in two weeks to tell me you left NY! Everyone here talks about it... what a beautiful state NY is... but we're being taxed out of the ballpark.

Laughing out loud at Nickie Goomba's comment! It really is a yummy cake, I'll post the recipe in the sidebar as Wanda did with her zucchini bread.

Chris... I still think about how "brave" I was to join you ...and how magical God's world is, if we just open our eyes!
Amanda, I wish you were here too...when you come home, I'll show you the photos with me in view that I didn't post ... embarrassing ;o)

  14. What lovely pics. We have a creek like that near or camp and it is so nice to go and just solve the world's problems while the creek rushes by. I love doing it.
